Connecting you iPod to your vehicle can be very difficult. There are a lot of different vehicles out there, and there are a lot of different products out there that claim to work on all of them. The three most common categories of iPod adapters are, direct audio inputs, wired FM modulators, and wireless FM transmitters. All three categories have their positives and negatives.

A direct audio input is probably the best way to get your iPod connected to your vehicle. This method will give you the clearest sound without any static, drifting, or interference. Basically, a direct audio input tricks the vehicle's radio into thinking there is a stock cd changer or satellite radio connected to the radio. Since these stock devices have good sound quality, the audio from the iPod will not be degraded. Some direct audio inputs adapters are designed around iPods and supply a cable that will plug into the bottom of your iPod. These adapters will charge your iPod and allow for control from your vehicle's radio. The only downfall to these interfaces is that they have to be installed by a qualified person, and they cannot be taken from car to car.

A wired FM modulator is connected directly in line with your radio's antenna. This allows the modulator to interrupt the FM signal coming from your vehicle's antenna. The signal is then sent through the antenna input on the radio (not transmitted wirelessly). No matter how strong the radio station is transmitting, there will be no interference. Wired FM modulators can allow for an input that has absolutely no static, but they do have a downfall.

Have you ever noticed that FM never sounds as good as a CD? This is because the sound quality of the FM tuner is lower than a CD player. Since a modulator uses the FM tuner band, the audio will only be as good as the FM tuner sound quality. So, if you have a very clear, CD quality, recording on you iPod it will only be as good as FM quality. I would recommend a FM modulator if your vehicle cannot support a direct audio input. A wired FM modulator is a good option. It is not the best option, but sometimes its the only option.

In my opinion, wireless FM transmitters are the worst. The reason being, usually there is a lot of static. This is because the FCC limits the output of the transmitter, and radio stations transmit higher than the FM transmitter. You tell yourself, it's not so bad, you can live with it. A month after you got it, it has pissed you off so much you will pay anything to get your iPod to work properly in your car. Even though they suck, they do have their purpose. Static or no static, they will work in any vehicle. Plus, since they do not have to be installed, you can take it from car to car.

Did your computer crash and all your music is only on your iPod? Do you want to transfer all of your MP3's from your iPod to a new PC, or use your iPod to transfer some songs to your work computer? You don't need to purchase special software as some people will lead you to believe. If you have Microsoft Windows, iTunes, and an iPod (set to show up as a removable drive); That's all you need! I'm going to walk you through the steps needed to do this.

Set Windows to show hidden files

Right click on your [START] button and select "explore". Click on [Tools] at the top, then "Folder Options...". This will bring you to a windows with customizable folder options. At the top, click the "View" Tab then scroll down halfway. Click on "Show hidden files and folders" and uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types".

Find songs hidden on your iPod

Plug your iPod into your PC via the USB cable. The iPod should show up as a removable drive (for example purposes, we'll call it the E: drive). Go to "My Computer" and then press your F3 key to pull up a search sub-window. Choose "All files and folders" if a little dog asks you any questions. Then, fill out the form as shown in Figure3 and click "Search"... This will show you all the MP3's that are on your iPod. Yes, they have weird names, but the song tags (Title, Artist, Genre, etc) are all still there. iTunes will rename them with their tag information when you import them.

When it is done searching, select them all by pressing "CTRL A" and copy them (right click -> copy) all into a new folder on your desktop (right click on your desktop and select New -> Folder). Copying may take a while depending on how many songs you are moving around. Once they are done copying, go to the next step.

Import the songs using iTunes

Install the latest iTunes if you don't already have it (refer to the apple documentation), then open iTunes. Immediately, click on [Edit] at the top, then click on Preferences. Once the window pops up, click on the Advanced tab and make sure "Keep iTunes Music folder organized" and "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library" are selected (VERY IMPORTANT). Then click Ok.

Now you will import all the music you copied. Click on [File] at the top and select "Add Folder to Library". It will ask you which folder to add. Navigate to your desktop and select the New Folder you created that contains all your music, then click OK.

Relax and let iTunes work

Thats it! As it imports, iTunes will use the tags to rename the songs to the correct information. Don't forget to delete the New Folder on your desktop when you are done. You no longer need these because iTunes copied them all to its own internal folder in your My Documents -> My Music folder.

Once you take your new iPod Touch out of the box, the first thing you should do is charge it up using the charger cord that came with it. While the device is charging, you can familiarize yourself with the instruction booklet that came with it.

Easily Customize Your Home Screen

Customizing the home screen is one of the first things most users want to do with their iPod Touch. The home screen (as Apple calls it) is what you see when you first turn your device on. It's the main screen with all of the icons on it. These icons represent the various features of the iPod Touch -- web browsing, email, weather, music, etc.

You can adjust this screen in several ways. For one thing, you can rearrange the icons to put the ones you use most often at the top of the screen. Essentially, this lets you prioritize your icons based on the way you use the device.

You can also use this technique to move certain icons to another home screen (you can have more than one), or to delete the icons from altogether. When you delete an icon from the main screen, that does not mean you are removing the program from your iPod Touch entirely ... it just removes the icon. In that way, it's similar to removing a shortcut from the desktop of your computer (it only removes the shortcut, not the program itself).

Customization By the Numbers

So let's sum up these instructions with some good old-fashioned numbered steps. Here is how you can customize the home screen of your new iPod Touch.

To rearrange the icons:

1. Turn your device on and go to the home screen (it usually comes up first).
2. Touch and hold any icon on that screen (weather, email, web browser, etc.).
3. The icons will begin to "wiggle" back and forth when they are ready for changes.

At first I thought the iPod touch games would be just regular tic TAC toe or Packman type games. However I was way off from the truth. There are some games on the this device that I never would have imagined being able to implement on such a small console.

In the past I am usually one to play a game or two on my cell phone while waiting for an appointment or a class to start, but the iPod touch games makes you take the time to play them! New, smaller iPod Shuffle gets the power of speech

Half the size of the last generation but with twice the capacity, the latest Shuffle boasts a novel way of letting you know what track you're listening to: It talks.

Available now for $79, is billed as the "world's smallest music player," and indeed, it looks tiny—just 1.8 by 0.7 by 0.3 inches, or (as Apple helpfully notes) a little smaller than a AA battery.

Gone is the circular navigation pad from the last-generation Shuffle; instead, you get a new in-line remote on the earphone cord, which includes volume up/down buttons, plus a center control that lets you pause and skip tracks. Not bad, but here's the only problem: Third-party earphones won't work all that well with the new Shuffle, or at least not until someone makes a pair with a compatible in-line remote.

Also new: VoiceOver, an intriguing attempt to replace the Shuffle's missing LCD display with a computerized voice that tells you the track name and artist of the song you're listening to. Just press and hold the center key of the Shuffle's in-line remote to hear VoiceOver speak.

The new Shuffle also gets playlist support—at last—thanks to VoiceOver. Here's how it works: Keep holding the center key and VoiceOver will tell you what playlist you're listening to, followed by a list of all available playlists; click again when you hear the playlist you'd want to select.

Interesting … although , VoiceOver isn't without its quirks. The voice itself sounds a bit robotic, and for some strange reason, Apple decided to give VoiceOver a male voice when synced with a Mac and a female voice for PC music lovers. Strange—why not give everyone the chance to choose for themselves? (Perhaps they will; guess we'll find out soon.)

That said, I like the fact that the new Shuffle (available in silver and black flavors) comes with 4GB of storage for $79, just $10 more than the old 2GB version.
